Under the watchful gaze of his aunt Helen, Scott Jarman steers his bike past houses built more than a century ago for the coal miners living in Treorchy. During the boom of the early 1900s the mines of south Wales employed a quarter million workers. Today only one deep mine remains open, and residents of the old coal valleys commute to jobs in places such as Llantrisant, Bridgend, and Cardiff. Communities remain close-knit though, and many people live within a few blocks of where they grew up. “Everyone knows each other,” says Andrea Jarman—Helen’s sister, and another of Scott’s aunts—who also lives in the neighborhood. “Chatting over the railings and over the back wall like when my mother’s mother was alive is something we still do here.”
