The Sublime Grotesque

Medusa, a snake-haired Gorgon of Greek mythology, was decapitated by Perseus, son of Zeus. That hideous moment lives on in this bronze hydria, a three-handled water jug cast in Sinop during Greek times, around 500 B.C., and found in a grave. Sinop was colonized by Greeks from the city of Miletus, which lay on today’s Turkish Aegean coast. In turn colonists from Sinop ventured out to establish their own trading posts along the Black Sea coast.
