Baked the old-fashioned way, flat bread browns on the sides of a cylindrical, wood-fired oven in a northern Afghanistan village. Marco apparently spent a year in this region recovering from an illness. Today the remoteness of the area and the privations inflicted by years of civil war combine to push the villages back in time—back to when the exotic foreigner Marco Polo paid a visit.
