Edible cargo reaches the waterfront of Venice, Italy, the growing-up grounds of Marco Polo. The sight of spices, silks, and jewels arriving in Venice from far-off lands during the mid 13th century undoubtedly instilled in Marco the urge to see distant realms. In 1271, 17-year-old Marco embarked from Venice with his father and uncle, both merchants, to travel to the little-known vastness of China. Marcos book describing his 24-year foreign adventure changed the way Europeans viewed the world.
