Driven by high winds funneling through the Columbia River Gorge, a windsurfer screams across the Columbia near the town of Hood River, transformed each summer from a quiet agricultural community to an international windsurfing resort. Sailors from around the globe log some 300,000 windsurfing days a year along a 40-mile (60-kilometer) stretch of river. When the gorge goes offa windsurfing expressionwinds can top 60 miles an hour (100 kilometers an hour), fierce enough to produce a haze along the surface that sailors call liquid smoke.
