Author Christopher B. Donnan of UCLA and Alana Cordy-Collins gently remove pieces from a copper headdress found in Tomb 3. Both the bones of the man buried in the tomb and those of the nine-year-old child buried beside him show abnormalities that suggest they may have suffered from Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes thin, elongated bones. Five of the skeletons found in the three tombs had unusual bone structure and may have been related. The group of ten small offering jars, or ofrendas, at the giant’s feet is one of several caches of goods arranged in sets of five, ten, and twenty, found in the graves, suggesting the Moche used a base-ten number system.
