Fluffed out like cotton candy, a red-footed booby nestling sits tight as a young adult comes in for landing. In all, Palmyra harbors nearly 30 bird species, including some of the worlds largest nesting colonies of red-footed boobies and black noddies. Bristle-thighed curlews, which number between 6,000 and 10,000 worldwide, winter here after migrating from their breeding grounds in western Alaska.
