A silvery kaleidoscope shimmers as surgeonfish part before the camera of photographer Randy Olson. He followed the school with a wide-angle lens, trying to get as close as two feet (0.6 meter): “I swirled around with them and completely lost track of where I was.” Palmyra’s waters are alive with damselfish, parrotfish, snappers, goatfish and other varieties. Anchored by some 130 species of stony coral, this underwater world is shared by manta rays, sharks, and dolphins, with occasional visits by the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.
