Eye-opening Plunge

Pulling a Tarzan, Alaska native Scott Blanchard swings into the warm waters of Palmyra shortly after sunrise. He was the chef when the Nature Conservancy flew in wealthy potential donors in hopes of getting contributions to help buy the atoll and preserve it in its near-pristine condition. Scientists view Palmyra as an ideal site for studies of changes in the global climate since more than ten centuries of temperature information is embedded in core samples taken from both dead and living coral.
